Evidence snapshot

Prospective and retrospective canine studies report disease-control signals in urothelial carcinoma, but response and toxicity vary by combination. A randomized trial did not establish that one piroxicam-containing chemotherapy combination was superior to the other. The evidence does not justify a universal anticancer claim.

Safety notes

Gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding, kidney injury, appetite loss, vomiting and diarrhoea are central concerns. Older oncology patients may have dehydration, kidney disease or concurrent medicines that increase risk. Cats require especially cautious species-specific NSAID decisions; this page does not recommend piroxicam for cats.

Interactions / cautions

Piroxicam must not be casually combined with another NSAID or a glucocorticoid. Diuretics, renin-angiotensin system medicines, anticoagulants and nephrotoxic chemotherapy can alter risk. A veterinarian determines any washout period and whether the expected benefit justifies the interaction burden.

Regulatory status

Piroxicam is not listed among currently marketed FDA-approved NSAIDs for dogs or cats and is not FDA-approved as a canine or feline cancer drug. US veterinary oncology use is extra-label under AMDUCA conditions.
