Canine Visceral Mast Cell Disease: Internal Organ Involvement
Overview
Visceral mast cell disease refers to mast-cell neoplasia involving internal organs such as spleen, liver, gastrointestinal tract, or other sites. It is distinct from a solitary low-risk skin tumor and may be primary, metastatic, or part of widespread disease.
Common signs
Reduced appetite, vomiting, dark stool, abdominal discomfort, weight loss, weakness, collapse, enlarged organs, or nonspecific illness may occur. Some abnormalities are found on bloodwork or imaging before clear outward signs.
Common locations
The spleen, liver, gastrointestinal tract, lymph nodes, and bone marrow may be evaluated according to presentation. The pattern of organ involvement helps distinguish localized from systemic disease.
Diagnosis discussion
Bloodwork and abdominal or thoracic imaging guide targeted sampling. Cytology may identify mast cells, while histopathology and comparison with any prior skin-tumor records can clarify origin and risk. Staging should answer a specific management question.
Urgency and when to contact a veterinarian
Collapse, very pale gums, repeated vomiting, black or bloody stool, a swollen painful abdomen, or breathing difficulty requires urgent care. Systemic signs in a dog with current or previous mast cell tumor merit prompt contact.
Treatment discussion
Systemic therapy, surgery for selected focal organ disease, targeted therapy, and intensive supportive or palliative care may be discussed. The team may address histamine-related gastrointestinal risk, but owners should not add antihistamines or acid suppressants without instructions.
Home monitoring
Track meals, vomiting, stool color, abdominal comfort, energy, gum color, weight, and every medication. Keep a timeline of all prior mast cell tumors, grades, margins, nodes, and treatments for the oncologist.
