The plan should also state what happens after intolerance, stable disease, or progression.
What current evidence can establish
Current oncology guidance distinguishes chemical drugs regulated by national authorities from biologics and notes rapidly evolving targeted options. Veterinary clinical evidence is drug- and tumor-specific. Product labels establish defined indications and safety information; they do not imply benefit outside those conditions or guarantee response within them.
A decision-focused pathway
Reconcile every prescription, NSAID, steroid, supplement, and diet before starting. Establish baseline CBC, chemistry, urinalysis or urine protein, blood pressure, gastrointestinal status, and other tests appropriate to the exact drug. Provide written administration, missed-dose, food, handling, and adverse-event instructions from the dispensing service.
Track a defined tumor or symptom endpoint alongside appetite, stool, vomiting, weight, energy, blood pressure, protein loss, blood counts, and organ values as relevant. When a biomarker is used, ask whether it is diagnostic, prognostic, predictive, or exploratory. Those roles are not interchangeable.
Evidence gaps and interpretation
The kinase-inhibitor class includes agents with different targets and evidence. Laboratory target expression does not prove clinical sensitivity, and tumor shrinkage is not the only possible endpoint. Cross-trial comparisons are unreliable when populations, response criteria, and prior therapies differ. Regulatory status and access change over time and by country.
Safety, monitoring, and escalation
Severe gastrointestinal signs, bleeding, collapse, breathing difficulty, profound weakness, painful skin changes, or other rapid deterioration requires prompt contact. Tablets should not be split or combined unless instructed. NSAIDs and other interacting drugs should never be added from another prescription without the oncology team’s review.
Match the specific drug to the specific indication
Tyrosine kinase inhibitor is a broad class name. Individual drugs inhibit different targets, have different veterinary approvals or off-label contexts, and are supported by different evidence for particular tumor types. A molecular target mentioned in a pathology or marketing report does not automatically show that blocking it will benefit the dog. The prescribing rationale should connect diagnosis, indication, evidence, treatment goal, and alternatives.
Home monitoring combines daily observations with the laboratory and examination schedule selected for that product and patient. Appetite, gastrointestinal signs, energy, skin or coat changes, bleeding, blood pressure concerns, and concurrent medicines may all be relevant, but owners should use the written drug-specific instructions rather than a class-wide checklist to change treatment. Missed, refused, or vomited tablets require a call before repeating a dose.
